What is MUN: A student’s perspective

When we talk primarily about diplomacy, and public speaking, we get to see an image of dullness, seriousness and an aura of professionalism in the said areas mentioned. But in my case, those are the fundamentals of every Model United Nations being conducted.

But setting aside the Model United Nations, we get to see a glimpse of it with its fundamentals. Diplomacy, creates “order”, “discipline” that is indeed important to achieve goals, especially when it serves the greater good. Objectively, it is the art of negotiation between representatives of states. There are different dimensions of diplomacy: multilateral diplomacy, paradiplomacy, bilateral diplomacy, the list goes on. It signifies the civilized way that nations have been adapting over the centuries. On the other hand, public speaking, naturally, means exactly what is says, “speaking in public”. But it doesn’t end with that, speech creates connection with other individuals, typically, it creates bridges, it burns down walls, and it enhances man, for man alone cannot survive without communication, and speech is its basic form.

I am talking with the fundamentals because it is necessary. Without these two, Model United Nations cannot be called as such.

Model United Nations is when you become a different person, especially for the welfare of others. You represent a country/ies, serving their national interests, speaking in behalf of their grievances and their decisions. And for me, that’s where Model United Nations sprung its peculiarity.

You, as a delegate, is hereby bound by the wishes of the people, of your representing state’s citizens.

You are a vessel to where they express themselves in the international community.

You are their voice, their living testimony, to where their passion and their dreams are being poured out, and being spread throughout the world.

You compromise, for a country can’t have the whole pie for itself, it must be shared to others to create stability and equilibrium.

You carry the burden weighing the whole nation down, and only you could lift it from their shoulders.

When a delegate speaks his heart out of the true contentions and flops of his nation, the whole world listens.

As I have discussed the fundamentals, keep in mind that you do not need to be a master of those in order to be qualified and deserving to represent a state of your choice, or assigned to you. Although those are necessary for a more effective delivery of issues and positions, what is more important is that you have understood what are the ideals and aspirations of the country regarding an issue, your sincerity in relaying it to the international spectrum, and your confidence in translating it in a way which is formal and proper in respect to your fellow delegates.

In the end, representatives reach an understanding in the form of a resolution. Where issues are hereby or partly resolved, and concrete solutions are laid down. And when resolutions are drafted and voted in its finality, it creates a ripple of hope, that nations will render it obligatory, for the common good of all.
